What Size Rice Cooker Do You Need? 3 vs 5.5 vs 10 Cups (with Calculator) Updated October 25, 2026 · Kitchen from Japan editors
Short answer Most households of two to four people should buy a 5.5-cup rice cooker. The catch is that the 5.5 means Japanese rice cups of 180 mL, which are smaller than a 240 mL US cup.
01 Rice cups are not US cupsZojirushi states that capacity is measured with its 180 mL rice measuring cup, using raw short-grain white rice. The US nutrition labeling standard treats 1 cup as 240 mL. So a "5.5-cup" cooker holds about 4 US cups of raw rice, not 5.5.
Always measure with the cup that came in the box. The water lines inside the pot assume that cup.
