Best Japanese Rice Cooker for Brown Rice (and What GABA Brown Means)

Short answerFor brown rice, an IH or pressure IH cooker with a GABA brown setting is the best choice, such as the Zojirushi NP-HCC10 or NW-JEC10. Every cooker on this site has a basic brown rice setting.
01Why brown rice is harder
Brown rice keeps its bran layer, so water takes longer to get in. That is why cookers that heat the whole pot (IH) or add pressure tend to handle it better than bottom-heated Micom models.
GABA brown is a separate setting for germinated brown rice. Zojirushi includes it on the NP-HCC10, NW-JEC10 and NS-LGC05, and Tiger on the JKT-D10U.
